Students Return to Campus for UW Move-In Day [PHOTOS]

It was organized chaos on the University of Wyoming campus today as students streamed onto Laramie for move-in day.

Students began unpacking their belongings as early as 7 a.m. to get situated before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Eric Webb, executive director of residence life, dining services and the Wyoming Union, estimated that they would have moved 1,800 students into the residence halls by the end of the day. Some students moved in early. Webb estimated that 50 percent of the students had moved in on Sunday.

“We prepare for this day for months,” Webb said. “It’s one of my favorite days of the year, there’s a lot of energy. It’s organized chaos.”

UW President Laurie Nichols visited campus to welcome new students moving into the residence halls. She said visiting students on move-in day is an opportunity to get to know the student body.

“For me, the best part is getting a sense of who our incoming freshman body is,” Nichols said. “That’s one thing I really appreciate. The other one is just the ability to say hello and to welcome them and make them feel that this really is a student-focused campus.”

Nichols is scheduled to address the freshman class after the “Welcome to UW” dinner from 4-7 p.m. today in the Washakie Center.

Nichols said she would talk to students about being new on campus and her experiences and memories of being the new UW president. Nichols said she plans to give students tips for how to be successful on campus and will end the address by having the students take a pledge to excel academically and to grow personally.
