Cowboys Look Sluggish in Exhibition Victory [VIDEOS]
Alexander Aka Gorski led four Cowboys in double figures with 20 points, as Wyoming defeated Regis 75-65 in an exhibition at the Arena-Auditorium.
Wyoming struggled with 23 turnovers that allowed the Rangers to hang around late in the game.
The Cowboys went on a 13-4 run early in the second half spurred by Hayden Dalton and freshman Hunter Maldonado. Both scored five points apiece and put UW ahead 54-35 with 13:31 left.
Regis never went away and pulled back within single digits with 3:48 left. Two baskets by freshman Austin Mueller snapped a nearly 8-minute field goal drought. That came before Nyaires Redding went 8-8 at the foul line over the final 2:26 that preserved the victory.
Aka Gorski’s 20 points included 4-7 from beyond the arc. Redding finished with 14 points and five assists, while Maldonado had 12 and Dalton 10 points, respectively. The Pokes shot 47 percent from the field, but they were only 6-21 from deep.
Regis had three players in double figures led by Dexter Sienko with 15 points. The Rangers shot 35 percent. They scored 28 points off Wyoming’s 23 turnovers.
After a slow start, Aka Gorski hit back-to-back 3-pointers as part of an early 10-3 spurt that gave UW a 19-8 lead. Regis came right back with a 10-0 spurt and pulled within 19-18. The Cowboys answered with a 19-1 run that eventually became a 40-24 halftime advantage.
Wyoming will open their 2017-18 season next Friday versus Chattanooga. The game starts at 7 p.m. in Laramie.
