Reviewing Cheyenne’s Newest Downtown Coffee Shop
Cheyenne's downtown coffee scene just got a bit more competitive with a new shop opening on Carey Avenue.
You can now get your caffeine fix at The Crooked Cup. Cheyenne is the Crooked Cup's fifth location and first in Wyoming. The other four are in Colorado with two in Fort Collins, and one in Windsor and in Longmont.
I tried the new place on a Thursday morning at about 8:00 a.m. The first thing I noticed was how great the interior looked. A clean, sharp design, with big bright menus that were easy to read. The decor and space was cozy and comfortable, exactly what you want with a coffee shop.
The second thing that caught my attention was that there was only one employee working at the time of my visit. He was working assiduously making both food and drinks. After ordering, he quickly apologized for the wait and explained he already had some employees not show up for work.
That said, I still received my breakfast burritos and a couple drinks in under 15 minutes.
I tried an Americano which is a standard coffee shop drink, and it was crafted exactly the way I liked it. My wife went sweeter and tried the "Crooked Peanut Butter Cup," a latte with peanut butter and hazelnut mocha which was very good for those with a sweet tooth.
We tried 2/3 of their burrito menu grabbing a bacon burrito and an egg and potato burrito. Both were very good and hearty, well worth the $5.25 each.
They also have a chorizo burrito, kolaches, and pastries including bagels, muffins, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. On the drink menu, they have a wide range of standard coffee and espressos, along with a good selection of teas and smoothies.
The Crooked Cup is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and open Sunday's 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
As much as I enjoyed my time and will be back to The Crooked Cup, I am concerned about their future. They are right around the corner from Cheyenne's most popular coffee shop, The Paramount Cafe. Going head to head with a well-established, beloved Cheyenne icon will be tough. However, the good news for both places is, obviously --- many people love coffee! So, there could be enough customers to sustain both places.
