Utah Man Gets 30 Days in Jail for Construction Worker Death
RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - A Utah man has been sentenced to 45 days in jail for fatally striking a highway construction worker near Elk Mountain.
50-year-old Karama Leota was sentenced to a year in jail, but 320 days were suspended. He was credited with 15 days served, leaving 30 remaining.
Leota struck and killed 45-year-old Shelly Yoho, of Rawlins, in June. He says something went wrong with the tractor-trailer he was driving. According to court documents, the semi struck a guardrail, swerved into oncoming traffic, struck the guardrail again and then drove off the road, hitting Yoho.
Investigators found no alcohol or drugs in Leota's system and could find nothing mechanically wrong with the truck.
He was initially charged with vehicular homicide, but was sentenced for failure to maintain a single lane of travel.
