Victims Identified in Fatal Crash Near Lander
A brother and sister, both in their teens, are among the three people killed in a two-vehicle crash near Lander Tuesday night.
Destinee Wheeler, 15, of Hudson, Darion Wheeler, 18, of Lander, and Paul McEwan, 20, of Greybull, died at the scene on Highway 789 about two miles north of Lander.
Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen says he is still waiting on toxicology results, which he expects to be returned in about a week. No autopsies will be performed.
Although the victims' names were used by others on social media in the wake of the crash, Stratmoen was unable to release the names until authorities could notify family members.
The three victims were traveling together in a northbound 2003 Honda Pilot SUV shortly before 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The SUV drifted to the east and failed to negotiate a left-hand curve in the highway, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The SUV was overcorrected and spun into the southbound lanes of WY 789, where it hit a southbound 1993 Chevrolet Silverado.
No update has been provided on the condition of the man who was driving the Silverado.
Troopers are investigating excessive speed and driver inattention as contributing factors in the crash.
