A late surge in the fourth quarter helped the Fresno State Bulldogs defeat the Wyoming Cowgirls 52-47 in Fresno, CA Wednesday night.

With just over five minutes left, the Cowgirls held a 44-40 lead. Fresno State finished the game on a 12-3 run for the five-point victory.

In a release from the university, Wyoming head coach Joe Legerski thought his team played well defensively.

“The execution was amazing on the defensive end, you give up 52 points and those are games you need to win. I thought we were solid down the stretch, but just didn’t make the shots that we had... When you have opportunities for easy points on the road against a quality team you have to finish those plays. This was a learning experience that we will address and hope we shoot the ball better.”

Wyoming (17-6, 9-3) shot 36.7 percent for the game. Clara Tapia led the Cowgirls with 12 points and seven assists. Marta Gomez added 11 points. UW held a 36-28 edge on the glass and got 23 points from its bench.

Fresno State (14-9, 7-5) won its third straight conference game. Candice White scored 16 points, while Bego Faz Davalos added 14. The Bulldogs shot only 34 percent from the floor, but they went 14-16 at the foul line. That was 10 more made and attempted free throws than the Cowgirls

Wyoming used a 12-2 run in the first half that led to a 29-25 lead at halftime. After the Cowgirls got up 33-27, the Bulldogs trimmed it to 38-37 by the end of the quarter.

UW stayed just a game back of Colorado State in the Mountain West standings, as the Rams lost at Utah State Wednesday night. The Cowgirls will host Utah State Saturday at 2 p.m.
