Wyoming Wins Two Titles On Day 3 Of MW Championships

University of Wyoming senior's Mason Finley and Garrett Zans claimed victory in the men's Discus and Steeplechase, respectively, on day three at the 2014 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Laramie.

Finley threw 202'-11" to win the Discus. It represented the second best mark in Mountain West Championship history. It was also the second time in the last three years that UW won the event.

Finley said, "It's all about points right now and contributing to the team... Paul and I were looking at where we were gonna be. We ended up right way our goal was, one and two, so that was awesome."

He won by a distance of just over 23 feet. His Wyoming teammate, junior Paul Thomas, was the runner-up at 179'-9." It gave the Cowboys 18 points in the team rankings.

In the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, Zans topped the field with a time of 9:21.52 seconds. He became only the second Cowboy ever to win the event at the conference meet. Derek Mitchum was first back in 1991.

In becoming a conference champion, Zans said, "I've been trying to get that for three years... it's been phenomenal; I'm just super happy about that; it's been awesome."

In other men's highlights, freshman Scott Carter placed fifth in the Long Jump. Junior Aaron Derner and sophomore Tyler Anderson were both sixth in the 10,000 meter run and Hammer Throw, respectively. Finally, junior Amos Bowen ended up eighth in the Steeplechase.

On the ladies side, freshman Audra DeStefano was second in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase. Junior Holly Page came in fourth in the 10,000 meter run. The final points came from junior Shreese Daniels, who finished seventh in the Hammer Throw.

In the team standings, the Wyoming Cowboys are in second place with 52 points. They trail Colorado State by six.

The Wyoming Cowgirls are in sixth place with 21 points in the team rankings. San Diego State amassed 68.50 team points to lead the way. They hold a 16.5 point edge over Colorado State.
