A Cheyenne man is behind bars after leading police on a short pursuit Wednesday night.

Cheyenne Police spokesman Kevin Malatesta says an officer attempted to pull an unregistered vehicle over in the 600 block of E. 6th Street around 10:30 p.m., when the driver took off.

"The suspect crashed at about Maxwell and 9th Street, running into a light pole," said Malatesta. "He hopped out of the vehicle, it turned into a foot pursuit and he was found in the backyard about a half a block away."

31-year-old Adam Schmidt was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and methamphetamine (both misdemeanor amounts), fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and three other traffic violations.
