Wyoming fans don’t have to worry about head football coach Craig Bohl going anywhere, anytime soon.

On the eve of the 2016 Mountain West Football Championship game, University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman announced a new seven-year contract with MW Coach of the Year Craig Bohl.

Burman said in a release from the university,

“When I hired Craig (Bohl) three years ago, I believed he was the best coach to turn around our football program. He has certainly delivered and the turnaround is evident in the performance of our team this season.”

Bohl stated in the same release, “This is a mutual agreement to continue to move Cowboy football forward. I can’t thank Tom Burman, Governor Mead, President Nichols and numerous members of the state legislature enough for the support they’ve provided our football program to help us be successful. And to our donors, fans and the UW student body, I want to thank them for the enthusiastic manner in which they have embraced our team and our coaches.”

The deal runs through the 2023 season. The starting salary will be $1.4 million in the first year and increases annually. It also includes incentive elements that will place Bohl near the top of MW head coaches in annual compensation.

Another key piece is to the new contract is the buyout. If Bohl were to leave, UW would be owed $6.5 million in the first year. It does decrease on an annual basis.

Bohl is 14-22 in three seasons at Wyoming. That includes a 10-14 mark in Mountain West games. He has led the Cowboys to an 8-4 overall record in 2016. They shared the Mountain Division title with a 6-2 conference record. Saturday’s MW Championship game appearance is their first title game since 1996.
