UW Trustees Seek Public Comment on Possible In-State Tuition Increases
During their meetings last week, the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees discussed decreasing tuition for out-of-state-students and for out-of-state-online courses.
Now the trustees are taking public comment on some recent recommendations to raise in-state tuition by 4 percent, UW says.
The trustees are being asked by the UW administration to consider a tuition hike, which would raise tuition for in-state undergraduates from $3,870 annually to $4,023 annually and increase tuition for in-state graduate students from $4,518 to $4,698. This includes only tuition and not additional mandatory fees.
The trustees recently discussed the capacity report presented by Huron Consulting Group last week. The consulting group recommended that the university reduce the annual undergraduate instate tuition from $15,500 to about $10,000. As part of their strategic plan, the university hopes to enroll 1,100 more students. Huron Consulting Group Senior Director Rose Martinelli said bringing in out-of-state students was the best way to achieve this goal.
Huron also said that instituting block tuition, where students can take anywhere between 12 and 18 credits for the same price, would also be beneficial in retaining students. Decreases to out-of-state online tuition were also recommended, along with gradual increases to in-state online tuition.
The public comment deadline is Feb. 12, so they can be presented during the board for during their Feb. 14 meeting. Commenters can provide written comments online at www.uwyo.edu/trustees/public-comment/.
