Wyoming Cowgirl tennis begins Mountain West Conference matches this weekend when they host New Mexico and Air Force at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.

Wyoming (10-5) has won six straight matches. They haven’t played in two weeks, but that’s okay with head coach Dean Clower, who said they needed the time off.

“We needed to get healthy. That was number one, getting healthy. Two was, there are tons of little things to go over in doubles that we had to clean up. I think we’ve done that.”

What specifically with the doubles? Clower said they’ve been working on what he calls ‘motion doubles.’

“I think one, just returns. Where to spot our returns at, and what does the net player do after the return; little things like that.”

New Mexico visits Friday at 2 p.m. They are 7-7 in dual competition. The Lobos won a 4-3 match in Albuquerque last year.

Air Force will play Colorado State before facing the Cowgirls Saturday at noon. The Falcons are 18-1 on the season. UW won in Colorado Springs a year ago, 4-3.

Clower said both matches will be very tight.

“There’s no top dog in the conference this year. There’s no bottom dweller. I’m looking at us being able to withstand the storm a little bit, being able to deal with the ebbs and flows of the match, and then us being aggressive on the big points.”

These matches begin a stretch of five league duals before the Mountain West Championships April 25-28 in San Diego.
