Wyoming Will Renew Football Rivalry With Utah
An old rival from the Beehive State will be part of two future football schedules for the Wyoming Cowboys.
The University of Wyoming and University of Utah announced a home-and-home series on the gridiron for 2020 and 2025. The first meeting in the agreement will be in Laramie at War Memorial Stadium on Sept. 19, 2020. The Cowboys will make the return trip to Salt Lake City on Sept. 6, 2025.
Wyoming Athletic Director Tom Burman was happy to make the announcement in a release from UW.
“This is a great opportunity for us to renew a traditional rivalry that goes back to the Skyline Conference, through the WAC and the Mountain West Conference. We’re excited for our fans, particularly in Western Wyoming.”
Even Cowboys' head coach Craig Bohl is looking forward to this series in his statement from the release.
“I’ve heard about the long history of this rivalry, and I know our fans will be thrilled to see Utah return to War Memorial Stadium. This will be an outstanding opportunity for us to play another quality PAC-12 opponent in the coming years. We look forward to the challenge as we continue to take steps forward in the development of our football program.”
The last time these teams played was in 2010, when Utah came to Laramie and beat the Pokes, 30-6, and before the Utes left for the PAC-12 conference. The rivalry dates back to 1904. The prior 83 meetings still rank this as the second-longest series for UW. Only the “Border War” against Colorado State has had more games played (108) as part of a single series.
With Wednesday’s announcement the Wyoming Cowboys future non-conference football schedules are now complete for the next five seasons, through 2021.
