Behind wins in six events, the Laramie Plainsmen won the Class 4A Girls’ Swimming and Diving State Championship for the fourth consecutive year on Friday.

Laramie used their power and depth to win by 119.5 points in the team race. They scored 370.5 points, while Cheyenne Central was a distant second with 251. Campbell County took third with 228 points.

Senior Katie McPherson won the 50 freestyle in 23.42 seconds, which is an All-American consideration time. She repeated as the 4A champion in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.20 seconds.

Laramie’s third individual win came from junior Anna Roesler, who rallied to beat defending champion Berkeley Christensen of Campbell County in the 100 butterfly event. Roesler just touched out Christensen by 0.28 seconds. The winning time was 57.01 for Roesler.

The final individual victory was by sophomore Ashlyn Mathes, who captured the 500 freestyle in 5:18.04. Mathes won by over 11 seconds in the distance event.

Those three also were part of Laramie’s wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. LHS won the 200 free relay in 1:37.96. They pulled away in the 400 free relay in 3:36.36, winning by 10 seconds.

For head coach Tom Hudson, this is his seventh title as head coach with the girls’ program at Laramie High School. For his career, it is title No. 18 as a head coach, which ties him with the late, great Layne Kopischka for state championships won in swimming and diving at Laramie High School. Hudson reflected on that achievement, this latest title, their keys to such a big win again, and more.

The three state champions (McPherson, Roesler, Mathes) for Laramie also talked with WyoPreps’ David Settle about their individual wins, the team title, and the keys to this championship.

Campbell County won four events in the finals. The Camels took first-place in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.89. Christensen defended her title in the 100 freestyle. Junior Allison Granat won the backstroke event by three-tenths of a second, 1:00.03. The final one was by sophomore Skye Rehard, who was first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.57.

Two more state champions defended their crowns.

Senior Gabriella Haigler won her third straight Class 4A diving championship with an All-American consideration score of 445.40 points.

Junior Abi Robinson-Kim from Rock Springs repeated as the winner in the 200 individual medley race. She swam 2:13.03 for the victory.
