Another week resulted in another fantastic performance turned in by the Laramie High School girls’ outdoor track team.

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen won the 23-team Denver North Viking Invitational last Friday at All-City Stadium in Denver. Laramie scored 140.50 team points and won by 37.50 over runner-up Pine Creek.

The LHS girls won five events and came through with 25 finishes that added points for the team.

Sophomore Libby Berryhill led the charge with victories in two events. She won the 1600-meters in a time of 5:34.19. Berryhill also captured first-place in the 3200-meters. Her winning time was 12:21.56.

Other wins came from senior Emily Brinegar in the discus. She threw 99-5. Juniors Emmy Johnson and Aubry Sanchez also won events. Johnson took the 200-meter dash in 25.45 seconds, while Sanchez came in first-place in the pole vault as she cleared 11-10.

Laramie head coach Gil Bradfield was very happy with the team win.

“We did score points across the board. We got some points that we found that we weren’t getting (in certain event areas). The kids are getting better and better in events. With that many teams, they were taking points away from each other, so sometimes we snuck in some points here and there, and that worked out pretty well in our favor.”

As for the victories from Berryhill and Brinegar, Bradfield said, “We (the staff and I) feel pretty good about that. They really did a great job, and it was just a good performance all-around.”

The Plainsmen came in fifth place with 49.50 team points. Pine Creek’s boys ran away with the team title, as they scored 164 points and won by 99. Laramie was just 15.50 points out of second place.

The top finishes came from sophomores Aidan Morris and Micah Zeller. Morris was runner-up in the pole vault. He cleared 13-3. Zeller took second in the 1600-meters in 4:32.55.

Bradfield feels the boys’ team is coming along.

“They’re getting more confidence, just getting better in their events. It’s just making it a lot easier to work hard and compete against other people that are equally as good.”

Overall Bradfield looked at last Friday in Denver as very positive.

“I think it (the meet) went really well. There was a lot of teams there. There was a lot of (good) competition… We’re feeling pretty good about everything going on into regionals.”

Laramie heads to the 4A East Regional Track Championships in Sheridan Friday and Saturday.
